Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 Review

Note – this is a spoiler-free advance review of Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1, which will be released on Wednesday, April 6.

To date, Marvel’s new Star Wars comics have been confined largely to the Original Trilogy era. Books like Star Wars and Darth Vader certainly succeed in capturing that classic Star Wars feel, but why dwell on the past when there’s a whole new galaxy to explore thanks to The Force Awakens? Poe Dameron is Marvel’s first ongoing series to explore the post-Return of the Jedi era. That certainly gives this new book a certain sense of novelty, but Poe Dameron isn’t quite ready to fly with the best yet.

Writer Charles Soule and artist Phil Noto certainly have a wide canvas on which to paint with this book. Poe Dameron is tasked with exploring how the titular hero honed his reputation as the best pilot in the galaxy and the face of the Resistance. Theoretically, that means the creators have a 30-year timeline in which to play, ranging from Poe’s birth at the end of the Shattered Empire mini-series up to the events of The Force Awakens. But in practice, Soule and Noto are severely limited by the fact that the post-Return of the Jedi timeline is still so poorly defined. There are many basic, fundamental questions about what transpired between movies that have yet to be revealed, and unfortunately, this comic was never going to be the one to address them. So it is that Poe Dameron #1 resorts to covering familiar ground, focusing on a small, recognizable cast and generally sticking too close to the confines of The Force Awakens.
