Microsoft Build 2016: Everything You Need to Know (Video)

While not the most celebrated or anticipated conference, Microsoft Build is still an important event. As an event for developers on Windows and Windows still being the most popular desktop operating system, the things announced at Microsoft’s Build event have some impact.

While it is a 3 day long event – that can actually be live streamed in it’s entirety – I figured I’d grab some of the most important announcements and condense them into an easier to digest video and bulleted list. From bots and a new age for Cortana, the Microsoft virtual assistant, to big changes for Skype and even Xbox being able to run Windows apps, check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below.

Anniversary Update

  • Biometrics for all apps
  • Windows Ink
  • Comes to Xbox and Holo Lens

Windows Ink

  • Cortana can grab words contextually and then use them to set reminders, edit
  • Rulers from the other hand can be controlled with two fingers to rotate and one to position, then you can use it to straighten lines
  • Ink drawn on a map can calculate distance, can record elevation so it is 3D when rotated
  • Crossing out words or paragraphs will erase them, highlighting can be straightened

Universal Apps

  • New Universal apps that will work on Xbox, Windows Desktop and Windows Phone
  • Bash shell from Ubuntu linux binaries running on Windows
  • Desktop app converter to convert existing desktop app from 32 bit or DotNet to a new universal app

Xbox

  • Xbox Dev Mode – Convert retail Xbox to Dev Kit with an app
  • Single store for Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone
  • Cortana
  • New Features like Background Music, new features announced at E3 in June

Holo Lens

  • Shipping to Windows Developers Now for $3000

Cortana and Bots

  • Cortana understands more context
  • Bots are apps that can communicate with you through text in a conversational way
  • Cortana can help you communicate with bots by recommending one when you need it and handing you off to it
  • Available on all your devices (Android, iOS, Windows, etc.)
  • Cortana can see emails and help grab documents and send them to contacts with a sentence (“Send Ben the powerpoint I was working on last night”)
  • Cortana wants to monitor your activities to learn how you operate and then preemptively offer help (“Would you like me to add the taxi ride you took last night to your upcoming expense report that is due soon?”)

Skype

  • Video mail new look
  • Cortana is in Skype chats
  • She’ll highlight text to try and improve your conversation (i.e. highlight a company name within your chat automatically and have that bring up a card containing info on the company)
  • She can privately message you and broker your conversations between you and bots (like a real personal assistant) with info from bots (“I just received a message from the Cups and Cakes Bot. They have a package and would like to know your location for delivery. Should I share it?)
  • Grabs info from other chats and will use that later to help you (you mention a trip it offers the Westin Bot to help book it).
  • Knows who you talk to so might offer to ask you if you want to reach out to a friend that she knows lives in the location you are about to travel to then prepare a message with info taken from your other conversations about the trip (i.e. she knows you’re going to Dublin from the 1st to the 3rd and asks you if you want to message a friend that lives in Dublin with the message “Hi Janny, I’m going to be in Dublin between the 1st and 3rd. Would love to catch up!
  • Intelligence like this in real time into videos is coming as well
  • Developers can access the Skype Bot SDK right now
  • Skype consumers can access bots right now as well in their Windows, iOS, and Android apps.
  • Skype for Holo Lens released as well

There you go a quick overview of everything announced at Microsoft Build 2016. Let me know what you guys think in the comments below!

How to Root the HTC Incredible S

HTC’s Incredible S was released quite a while ago. Back then it came with then-latest version of Android called Froyo running on-board and while it’s been several years since the phone was announced, it’s still owned by many people around the world. The phone eventually got various software updates namely Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich, but that’s where it stopped.

The latest update it received is now considered to be obsolete as we’ve had quite a few new versions of Android since. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your phone to run the latest version. If you root your HTC Incredible S, you can get access to tons of custom ROMs that allow you to install newer versions of Android and even get custom versions.

Besides flashing a custom ROM, you can also remove the stock apps, flash custom kernels, and more. Gaining root on the HTC Incredible S isn’t as hard as you may think it’d be being an old phone, in fact, rooting it is as easy as rooting the latest phone from the Taiwan based company.

Here’s how to root the Incredible S.

Before You Begin

  1. This could void the warranty of your device. We won’t be held responsible for anything that happens from doing this tutorial so please proceed at your own risk.
  2. This will erase the data stored on your device. So, please backup everything that you wish to keep.
  3. You must have a Windows based PC to do this procedure.
  4. You should have HTC Sync installed on your Windows PC. Install it if it isn’t already.
  5. This should also flash a custom recovery on your device.
  6. You should only try this on an HTC Incredible S.

How to Root the HTC Incredible S

Root HTC Incredible S

To root the device, you’ll first unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery, and then use that recovery to flash SuperSU to get root. Here’s how:

Downloading Required Files

  1. Download Fastboot and save it to your desktop.
    Fastboot
  2. Download ClockworkMod Recovery and save it to your desktop.
ClockworkMod Recovery (Download the one that is for your device)
  3. Download SuperSU and save it to your desktop.
    SuperSU

Unlocking the Bootloader on the HTC Incredible S

  1. Extract files from Fastboot over to your desktop by right-clicking on it and selecting Extract here.
  2. Enable USB debugging on your device by heading to Menu > Settings > Developer options > USB debugging.
  3. Plug in your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  4. Launch a command prompt window on your desktop by holding down Shift and right-clicking anywhere on the screen and selecting Open command window here.
  5. When the command prompt window launches, type in the following command and hit Enter:
    adb reboot bootloader
  6. Your device should reboot into bootloader mode.
  7. Now, type in the following command and press Enter:
    fastboot oem get_identifier_token
  8. You’ll see a long text string in the command prompt window. Highlight it all and copy it to your clipboard for later use. Make sure you only copy the string and not words like <bootloader>, etc.
  9. Head over to the HTCDev Bootloader website and follow the on-screen instructions for unlocking the bootloader on your device.
  10. At one step, the site will ask you to input the string that you copied in the above steps. Paste the string and click on Submit.
  11. Once you’ve submitted the string to HTC, they’ll email you an unlock file. Download that file and save it to your desktop.
  12. Get back to command prompt and type in the following command and hit Enter:
    fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
  13. Hit Yes when prompted for unlocking the bootloader on your device.
  14. Your bootloader should now be unlocked.

Congrats! Your device is now ready to be flashed with a custom recovery to then be rooted. Here’s how to flash a custom recovery:

Flashing a Custom Recovery on the HTC Incredible S

  1. Enable USB debugging on your device by heading to Menu > Settings > Developer options > USB debugging.
  2. Plug in your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  3. Open a command prompt window on your desktop by holding down Shift and right-clicking anywhere on the screen and selecting Open command window here.
  4. Type in the following command into the command prompt window and hit Enter:
    adb reboot bootloader
  5. Your device should reboot into bootloader mode.
  6. Type in the following command into the command prompt window and press Enter. Make sure to replace cwm.img with the actual name of the ClockworkMod Recovery Image you have downloaded.
    fastboot flash recovery cwm.img
  7. Wait for it to flash CWM on your device.
  8. When it’s done flashing CWM, reboot your device using the following command:
    fastboot reboot
  9. Your device should reboot.

Great! A custom recovery has been successfully flashed on your HTC Incredible S, and here’s how you can use this newly installed recovery to achieve root on your device:

Rooting the HTC Incredible S

  1. Connect your device to your PC using a USB cable.
  2. Copy SuperSU .zip from your desktop over to the internal SD card storage on your device.
  3. When SuperSU is copied, disconnect your device from your PC.
  4. Turn off your device.
  5. Turn your device back on in recovery mode by holding down Volume DOWN and Power buttons together.
  6. Choose Recovery from the options available on your screen.
  7. Select install zip from sdcard in the recovery menu.
  8. Select choose zip from sdcard on the screen that follows.
  9. Choose SuperSU .zip to be installed on your device.
  10. Hit Yes when prompted.
  11. CWM should begin flashing SuperSU on your device. Wait for it to do so.
  12. When CWM’s done flashing SuperSU, reboot your device by selecting reboot system now.
  13. Your device should reboot.

And there you go, your HTC Incredible S is now rooted!

Now, with root-access and a custom recovery, your device is all set to be loaded with a custom ROM of your choice. You can check out the Android ROMs collection we have here on our site and pick a ROM that you think will best suit your device.

Let us know how it worked for you!

Oculus Rift Review

Virtual reality technology is literally a game changer. For the first time since 3D graphics came around 20 years ago, it radically changes the way we play games and opens the door to new experiences that until now would’ve been impossible. The Oculus Rift is the first headset available, and it does a fantastic job of not just displaying high-quality VR, but making it easy to use.

It’s tough to relate the experiences the Rift can give you with words and two-dimensional video and images, because this is unlike anything most people have ever seen. To give you an idea of how powerful it is to fully immerse yourself in a virtual world: it can not only make you forget where you really are, but fool your brain into thinking you’re moving (or falling) when you’re actually sitting still, creating a real sensation you can feel in your stomach. It’s hard to believe this technology exists – and that it works – but it does. It is, in a word, amazing.

How to disable Auto-Correction on iOS

From its inception, the iPhone has offered a capable, time-saving feature which offers suggestions and corrects misspelled words as you type. Though the Auto-Correction feature is indispensable for speed typists, it can be quite a nuisance if your choice of words, your writing style or vocabulary exceeds iOS’s built-in dictionary. Don’t believe me? Just visit…

My Nintendo Rewards Program Starting in March

During its meeting with investors today, Nintendo outlined details of its upcoming My Nintendo loyalty program.

According to translations by Cheesemeister3k the program’s first goal is to reach 100 million users. Nintendo hopes to reach that goal by rolling the My Nintendo program out in 39 countries.

Nintendo said points are accumulated through smart devices or game consoles. From there, the points, which come in both platinum and gold varieties, can be used for a variety of rewards like discount coupons or in exchange for “original goods.”

A rough Google translation of the Nintendo slides accompanying the presentation says the platinum and gold points are for “fun and for deals,” respectively. In other words, platinum points will go toward the old-style Club Nintendo rewards, while gold points will be for savings and special deals.

Emoji Party is like Heads Up! with emojis… and on Apple TV

unspecified

Whenever I’m in a crowded area, especially where there are long lines (think: Disneyland) I see dozens of people playing Heads Up! It is hugely popular and a fun way to pass the time when you are with a group of people.

Emoji Party is similar to Heads Up!, but instead of just words on the cards, the app also uses thousands of iconic emojis. If you are really good at making faces, you can help the guesser with recognizable emoji looks. The best part is that this game is compatible with tvOS, so you can get hours of charades fun right in your living room…. Read the rest of this post here
